Polish Ancient Constitution
The label “Polish Ancient Constitution” embraces one of the crucial research activities at the
Tocqueville Center. It focuses on the doctrinal hertiage of the Polish-Lithuanian
Commonwealth with her unique early modern constitutional system, largely influences by
republican ideas of a mixed government, ethos of civic participation for the common good,
and equality among the citizens. This research activity is composed of several projects which
have been run by the members of the Tocqueville Centre for several years.
The important moment in establishing this field of studies was the international conference in
2014 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta which presented the Central
European experience of freedom. As the result this following book was published: Magna Carta. A Central European Perspective of our Common Heritage of Freedom, ed. Z. Rau, P. Żurawski vel Grajewski, M. Tracz-Tryniecki, Routledge, London 2016
The largest project within this field is the Library of Old Polish Political Thought which is
intended to prepare the critical edition of Latin political and legal treatieses published in the
Polish-Lithuanina Commonwealth in the 17th century.
