Vir Consilii
Andrzej Maksymilian FredroVir Consilii is the sixth volume published in the Library of Old Polish Political Thought series, issued by the National Centre for Culture, the Alexis de Tocqueville Centre for Political and Legal Thought, and the Foundation for Supporting Research on Old Polish Political and Legal Thought named after Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro.
The last and most extensive work by Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro, presented in the form of a rhetoric manual, in fact serves as a summary and culmination of his entire intellectual legacy — not only in the areas of political and legal thought but also in economics, military theory, praxeology, and religion. Reconstructed on the basis of the posthumous 1730 edition and two authorial manuscripts that allow the evolution of the text to be traced, Fredro’s final treatise is made available for the first time to Polish readers. It was translated by an outstanding team of translators: Jagoda Marszałek, Iwona Krawczyk, the late Dr. Józef Macjon, and Dr. Bartłomiej Bednarek; collated by Iwona Krawczyk; and introduced by Dr. hab. Marek Tracz-Tryniecki, Professor at the University of Łódź, a scholar of Fredro’s thought.
The preparation of the translation and scholarly edition of Vir Consilii was made possible thanks to the support of the Sponsor — the PZU Group.
The project was carried out in cooperation with the National Center for Culture and co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
