Polonus
Piotr MieszkowskiPolonus is the eighth volume published in the Library of Old Polish Political Thought series, issued by the National Centre for Culture, the Alexis de Tocqueville Centre for Political and Legal Thought, and the Foundation for Supporting Research on Old Polish Political and Legal Thought named after Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro.
Piotr Mieszkowski’s extensive treatise serves as a unique summary of the achievements of Polish political thought during the Golden Age. This apotheosis of the political system of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth also offers a profound exposition of republican ideals and a celebration of the virtue essential for the effective functioning of a political community. In Mieszkowski’s work — an example of parenetic literature — everyone, depending on their social role, has a part to play in the grand drama titled Respublica. The treatise is presented in an excellent translation by the late Dr. Józef Macjon and Teresa Macjon, and is introduced by a brilliant preface by Professor Tomasz Tulejski, who, for the purposes of this study, temporarily set aside his Anglo-Saxon republicanism to examine its native Polish form.
The preparation of the translation and scholarly edition of Polonus was made possible thanks to the support of the Sponsor — the PZU Group.
The project was carried out in cooperation with the National Center for Culture and co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
