De politica

Aron Aleksander Olizarowski

De politica is the seventh volume published in the Library of Old Polish Political Thought series, issued by the National Centre for Culture, the Alexis de Tocqueville Centre for Political and Legal Thought, and the Foundation for Supporting Research on Old Polish Political and Legal Thought named after Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro.

This extensive and erudite treatise by the famous Vilnius academic Aron Olizarowski, presenting a comprehensive and systematic account of political knowledge, has long attracted interest for the radicalism of its approach to social issues. Now, twenty years after its Lithuanian edition, it is made available for the first time to Polish readers in an excellent translation by the late Dr. Józef Macjon. The volume is accompanied by two introductions: a biographical introduction by the unsurpassed expert on the Vilnius Academy and on Olizarowski himself, Professor Piotr Niczyporuk, and a doctrinal introduction by Dr. Paweł Sydor, a seasoned scholar of Old Polish thought.

The preparation of the scholarly edition of De politica was made possible thanks to the support of the sponsor — the PZU Group.

The project was carried out in cooperation with the National Centre for Culture and co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

ALEXIS DE TOCQUEVILLE

french political thinker, sociologist, politician

Author of the two-volume work Democracy in America, widely regarded as the most insightful analysis of democratic political society. Of particular importance are his examinations of the conflict between liberty and equality, the benefits of local self-government and political associations, as well as the relationship between the state and churches. One of the most important thinkers of the 19th century to have formulated the idea of liberal democracy. Tocqueville believed that democracy is not harmful only insofar as it does not threaten individual liberty and autonomy.
