On May 28, in the Faculty Council Hall, the Tocqueville Center hosted a promotion of the two most
recent titles in the “Translated Works of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Political Thinkers” series:
Polonus by Piotr Mieszkowski and De officiis by Łukasz Opaliński the Younger—volumes VIII and IX
respectively, both of which have recently received prestigious awards.
The event was opened with remarks of the Dean of the Faculty of Law and Administration, Prof.
Monika Bogucka-Felczak (University of Łódź), who then, together with the series coordinator, Prof.
Marek Tracz-Tryniecki (University of Łódź), presented the Feniks Award statuette and diploma in the
translation category to Ms. Teresa Macjon, co-author of the Polonus translation. The award was
granted posthumously to her late husband, Dr. Józef Macjon.
Prof. Małgorzata Kurzynoga (University of Łódź), Vice-Chair of the Supervisory Board of PZU, then
spoke about the importance of supporting research accompanying the editorial work on the series,
supported by the PZU Group, which serves as the sponsor of the Library of Old Polish Political
Thought.
Prof. Pikulska-Radomska delivered a lecture on pre-war research into Old Polish political thought
conducted by Prof. Eugeniusz Jarra and members of his Seminar in Philosophy of Law, with special
emphasis on doctrinal research carried out by the future professor Cezary Kunderewicz. The current
edition of De officiis is dedicated to these scholars, and also includes a commemorative essay by Prof.
Pikulska-Radomska.
Dr. Anna Maciejewska shared insights into the process of translating De officiis, while the doctrinal
significance and research methodology of both volumes were discussed by the scholarly
editors—Prof. Tomasz Tulejski for Polonus and Prof. Marek Tracz-Tryniecki for Opaliński’s treatise. In
response to questions from the audience, Prof. Tracz-Tryniecki announced that the upcoming
editorial work in the series would include the preparation and publication of the final three volumes,
authored by Sacha, Hartknoch, and Fredro, scheduled for release in 2024–2025.
The entire event was moderated by the Director of the Tocqueville Center, Dr. habil. Michał
Rupniewski.
